San Diego Comic Con 2023 took place on July 20-23, 2023 in downtown San Diego taking over the famed convention center and the Marriott Marquis hotel. The biggest pop culture event on Earth had a different tune this year. Known for the grand Hollywood presence and programming in Hall H, SDCC 2023 would not see those in 2023. SDCC was immensely effect by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike that began during the summer of 2023. Thus, a mainstream Hollywood presence of writers and actors would be considered going against the union during the strike.
Attendees were split in how to feel about this truth. Would SDCC focus back on their roots as a comic book event or would comic con would not be comic con as they know it? We attended SDCC Special Edition in 2021. The lack of Hollywood did not bother us; if anything, it gave us time to focus more on indie comics and creators. I’ve attended SDCC in 2008, 2022, and 2023 and my focus was always bringing light to indie creators. However, mileage can vary among what you want out of comic con. As always, the convention is what YOU make out of it. I intend to always make it a good one.
After all, SDCC is one of the most highly sought out conventions to attend.
