Fanime Con 2023 took place on May 26 to May 29, 2023 at the San Jose Convention Center in San Jose, CA. The “by fans, for fans” convention returned to their San Jose home bringing in thousands of west coast otaku to one of the longest running anime conventions in the country. This is Fanime’s second year after a two year hiatus post-lockdown. The convention had cosplay, Japanese, and voice actor guests at their four day event. Vendors, artists, and even a swap meet brought folks to empty their wallets. Cosplayers showed off their best. Of course, people partied at Park Con down the street until the wee AM hours.
I have attended Fanime since 2003 on and off. I consider Fanime one of my “home cons” because many of my early friendships in fandom were formed in the Bay Area. It’s interesting to see all of us grow from attendees to staff taking up leadership in our age. In a world where conventions are cutting back, where does Fanime Con fit in the picture?
