[ClassicCosplay] Anime Expo 2016: 10 Cosplays from Throwback Anime

Anime Expo 2016 has come and gone. In their 25th year drawing in 98,000 unique attends over the four days, there’s bound to be someone cosplaying from a memorable anime series from yesteryear. This is what Scarlet Rhapsody’s Eri Kagami, was able to find on camera. Anime Expo is a huge event, it’s almost impossible catching them all!

Before there was iDolm@ster or Love Live, we had cute chibified digital idols from the world of DigiCharat. Rabi ~ en ~ Rose is our lead’s main rival and determined to keep her spot as number one digital idol.

9. Sanzo and Goku from Saiyuki

Another anime based on Journey to the West, I do remember Saiyuki cosplayers taking over the Anaheim Convention Center in 2003. It was the fujoshi thing to do at the time.

8. Sakura from Sakura Wars

She might be in Project X Zone games, but Sakura Wars is celebrating their 20th anniversary this year. Sakura is the demure girl with a samurai sword. She’s even been featured in Sega commercials with a certain Sega mascot.

7. Chi from Chobits

During Anime Expo 2002, we saw a huge influx of Chi cosplayers just as the manga was being released by Tokyo Pop and Pioneer just got the rights to release the anime. Frilly and cute, Chi is the naive, but lovable persocom who has an immense wardrobe drawn by CLAMP.

6. Wolfwood and Vash from Trigun

Deep space planet, future gun action. At least that’s what series creator, Yasuhiro Nightow, describes this desert punk anime.

5. Fuu and Hikaru from Magic Knights Rayearth

In the 90s, it was commonplace for ordinary Japanese school girls to be whirled away into magical worlds and becoming magical girls. Before Madoka was considered edgy, Rayearth’s dark twist left viewers in awe. Things are not always what they seem.

4. Ukyo, Ryoga, Shampoo, and Akane from Ranma 1/2
