Wonder Con started at 12PM on a sunny Southern California Friday. Fanboys and fangirls were already lining up to grab their badge as early as 8AM. Our panels did not take place until noon. We wandered the premises and took photos of cosplayers. One interesting addition to Wonder Con was the eletronic turnstiles that were around the main outside areas of Wonder Con where one would have to tap their badge to gain entry into the major gathering points. We took time to look at the schedule for the weekend and there was much to do in three days!

Rangers 'n More by Jared the Greek
This was the first time I ran a panel at Wonder Con and it made for an exciting experience. Our presentation was trapped in traffic as the panel began, however, I was able to keep things under control until the team arrived. The audience was patient and fun making the wiat far less stressful. As the panel began we discussed the way that Power Ranger made it to the US, including previous failed attempts to bring sentai overseas. We then went into some of our favorite Zords and transformations. We ended the panel by talking about some of the Japanese series and taking questions from the audience. Even with the delay the panel turned out great and hopefully our Power Ranger panel can return next year with no delays.

Disneybounders Unite by Eri Kagami
Hosted by Crystal Rose Creations, a handful of Disneybounding “experts” fielded frequently asked questions about Disneybounding, the latest fashion craze among nerds. Disneybounding is a fashion statement in which you would dress and be a Disney character while attending the parks without fully being in costume. Disney Parks have rules wherein adults cannot wear full costumes to the park. The panelists talked about who they loved dress up as in the park and future plans for bounds. One panelist even talked about his Aladdin themed birthday. Dress up events like Dapper Day and Pinup Parade were covered. Panelists also fielded questions from the audience on how to get started.

Spotlight: Marguerite Sauvage by Eri Kagami
Wonder Con had a handful of creator spotlights sprinkled throughout programming. I ended up checking out one that did cater to what I am currently reading. Marguerite Sauvage is one of the artists on DC Bombshells. She has also done work on Faith and Wonder Woman. The artist spoke fluent French and a little bit of English. She talked about being into anime growing up - she cited shows like Robotech and Jem and the Holograms as her inspiration. She also talked about what software she uses and interacting with her cat while meeting deadlines. There was a humble audience out for this creator spotlight. However, Marguerite was at her booth signing autographs. She did stop by the DC Booth for signings and selfies.

Journalism by Eri Kagami
The panel focused on writing for geek oriented e-journalism outlets in the age where anyone can be a blogger. Featured topics of discussion included how to be involved in writing for media outlets. Panelists encouraged aspiring geek journalists to just go out and contact various outlets as they are always looking for writers on standby. They also talked about writing about contreversial topics within geek culture and the fine line between opinion editorials and click bait. Panelists also discussed dealing with dissent from online trolls.

1987: The Best Geek Year Ever by Jared the Greek
Every year a group of writers, producers, and musicians get together to talk abut the classic ‘geek’ movies that came out thirty years prior. While some years have provided some great entries like 1982 and 1984, this time we didn’t have quite the same pick of exciting titles as previous years. However, there were still some amazing titles for the panel to discuss like: Robocop. Predator, The Princess Bride, Lethal Weapon, Spaceballs, and Full Metal Jacket. Every year this is a great panel that discusses some of the best movies of that year, many of whom still hold up. If you are a movie buff then this is a must see panel.
