Time to get into your best Jojo pose! While Jared waltzed off to the Jojo meet up, Eri Kagami changed into Kongou for the Kantai Collection meetup. Though Annapolis is half an hour away from Baltimore. we had a good amount of savvy boats to take over Baltimore. Saturday also had masquerade down the street as the Billy Joel concert played near by. Baltimore was really happening on Saturday night.
Kantai Collection Cosplay Meet by Eri Kagami
Kantai Collection, or KanColle is all about the Japanese navy reimagined as bishoujo and moe girls. The meet up was held at the outdoor fountains. This was not listed as an official Otakon cosplay meet up since it was outside Baltimore Convention Center proper. However, the outdoor fountains are a staple of cosplay photos found at Otakon; it seemed to work perfectly for Kantai Collection’s nautical theme. Various boat girls and pairings were called up. The downside to having a cosplay meet at the fountains is that people outside the con sneak in photos. The highlight of this Kantai Collection meet up was a pose off. Whomever had the best pose in character will win a Kantai Collection umbrella. An I-8 took home the prize.
So You Want to be Published? by Jared
This panel was designed around how to design a good comic book and move toward publication. The panel began with a discussion of the various methods of getting published and an explanation about how long and difficult the road to publication can be. It was nice to hear realistic stories about how difficult it can be to get published and how much money, time, and work it can be to make it as a writer.
Behind the Stand: Jojo’s Bizarre Discography by Jared
This panel was a great example of good idea and poor execution. The panel covered various bands that are referenced in the Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure series. However, the panel had many problems including the panelists seeming unsure of their information and the music they were playing was overtaking their voice on the speakers. The audience not only got restless with the problems, but bored with the presentation. If this panel was run better then it would be very interesting, sadly it was not and many Jojo fans were unhappy with the results.
OC ReMix: 10 Years of Celebrating Video Game Musicat Otakon by Jared
Some of the artists behind Overclocked Remix hosted a panel where they discussed the history and future of their site. Everyone was fun and it was interesting to hear how things had grown over the years. The panel was wrapped up with a Street Fighter contest, where players had to play the original Street Fighter for points and the winning team got several prizes. When the panel was over all attendees were given CDs for staying the whole time, which was a nice bonus. If you are a fan of classic video game music or great remixes then you should check this panel out.
New Anime for Older Fans by Jared
While there tend to be panels that try get introduce younger fans to classic anime, it is rare to see panels that try to introduce older fans to newer anime. It was nice to see something that helped introduce newer series to those who have grown up and don’t have time to watch every single thing that comes out each season. This time they had a fresh list of titles and played some clips from selected titles. The panel was so popular that their fliers that had the list of shows vanished within seconds. Thankfully someone was nice enough to let those who could not get a flier take a picture of the flier so they could have the list on their phone.
