It was overcast along the Southern California coast, but Long Beach Comic Con was all sunshine. Sunday was a much more lighter day than Saturday. It was easier to navigate the dealers hall even with the narrower aisleways. For Sunday, Jared cosplayed as a Jungle Cruise skipper from the Disney parks. Eri Kagami cosplayed as Shoukaku from Kantai Collection. Sunday was much slower than Saturday, but there were still a few things worth mentioning about the much mellow day two.

Star Cars and Food Trucks by Jared the Greek
One of the staples of Long Beach Comic Con is show line of Star Cars.  This includes iconic vehicles like the Mach-V, the Jurassic Park jeeps, KITT, and Austin Powers’ Shaguar.  It’s always fun to check out the various cars and they make great photo op backgrounds as well.  In addition to that there were several food trucks in the same general area outside the convention.  These gave a good variety of offerings from boba to pastrami.  However, due to demand many of the trucks ran out of food or had long waits due to the sheer number of orders.  Hopefully this won’t be a problem next year.

Starting and Sustaining a Career in Writing Animation by Jared the Greek
This was a loose discussion panel where veterans of animation talked about the difficulty of earning and keeping a job in animation.  It was a good way to learn the importance of being a good person, following directions, and building a good reputation.  The panelists were open to questions and gave direct answers that may not have made everyone happy, but that kind of honesty is why panels like this are important.  This was a very informative panel and a great way to learn from professionals in a relaxed environment.

The Video Game for Kids by Eri Kagami
During the previous evening, Jared the Greek checked out the late night version of The Video Games. This cosplay performance troupe performed in the main stage in the panels floor. Kids and their parents sat in tables to watch Southern California's favorite cosplay stunt show. The premise is the Video Games is various video game characters get together to battle in a Hunger Games style fight to the death. Only one can be the winner of the Video Games. Audience members decide who lives and who dies. Most of the characters were from Nintendo. There was a Yuna, though there was a kid who yelled "Who are you?" The kids were getting really into it and rooting for their favorites and even calling out to them from the audience. This was a much more livelier audience than the previous evening. The stunt fighting was still the same, but the sexual and adult references were removed. The most exciting part was the final four where it was a Smash Brothers style duel to the death with hammerspace, wands, and more. The Video Games are always exciting to watch no matter what age you are.

Disney Cosplay Gathering by Eri Kagami
This is our second Disney cosplay meet up in Long Beach. I attended as a photographer. Jared represented the Jungle Cruise from the attractions side. We were sure if there would be people also dressed up from park attractions, but we found someone cosplaying as the graveyard dog owner from the Haunted Mansion and a Mandolorian dressed up in a Haunted Mansion inspired outfit. Of course, princesses from the classic and renaissance era. Groups that were called were princesses, attractions, villains, Disney TV shows, Pixar, and era by era.

Couples Cosplay by Eri Kagami
I went to the couples cosplay panel. It was run by three couples; two heterosexual and one gay couple. I found it interesting that all panelists identified as Latino Hispanic; one couple even talked about their take on Star Wars characters as Han Cholo, Princess Loco, and Artudito. They also talked about being able to afford the hobby by creating each others costumes or utilizing found items. The panelists also talked about gaining confidence in entering cosplay competitions. They also talked about ignoring haters and gave some newbie advice for cosplay.

Lawyers of Hell's Kitchen by Jared the Greek
With the popularity of the Netflix series Daredevil and Jessica Jones it was interesting to see a panel that discussed the legality of the actions the characters take.  The panel covered various cases from the shows and the issues that might come with vigilante justice.  One of the funnier moments was the confirmation that taking a selfie after delivering a summons was not only legal, but also welcomed as the picture would have location and time data.  This was a fun panel despite the heavy subject matter and it is nice to see this type of unique analysis in panel form.

With that said, Long Beach Comic Con 2016 has come to an end. We had our Scarlet Rhapsody after party at the Rock Bottom Brewery across the street to wind down and collect our thoughts about Long Beach Comic Con.
