Cypher Circles by Victoria

Aside from cosplay, gaming, and ponies, another Fanime Con pastime are the cypher circles. These are better known as circles where people play music and someone dances in the middle. These are usually done on the fly and they always attract an audience. The Bay Area has a pretty good dance community and there is some intersect with the anime community. Circles are usually formed in the convention center or in the main plaza if there's not a major cosplay gathering happening.

Cosplay Repair Station by Victoria

Hidden in the Hilton first floor, one can find the cosplay repair station. Unfortunately, the pocket program guide did not list the events going on at the cosplay repair station. One can grab a few safety pins or borrow a glue gun for a quick fix. There were several events and panels going on inside the cosplay repair station. I thought this was pretty creative since you can get tips on wig styling and cosplay basics while you fixed up minor costume infractions.

Chopped Cosplay by Victoria

One event we checked out at the cosplay repair station was Chopped Cosplay. The best way to describe this event is Project Runway meets Iron Chef. Cosplayers were given limited materials and tools to recreate costumes from the Final Fantasy Franchise. Three teams were pitted to go head to head and improvise as best they could on recreating a Final Fantasy character. The show was hosted by longtime Fanime Con personality, Rob Miles.

The event was founded by B Sapphire, the fearless Cosplay Gatherings coordinator. She invited us to be judges for the next Chopped Cosplay event for Fanime 2013.

Nightlife by Victoria

Fanime Con has a happening night life. While we did not hit any room parties, there are still a bunch of late night panels and entertainment running into the early hours of the morning. Hot Yaoi Nights and Hentai Nights are for the more perverted 18+ crowd. Several late night panels were going on to also entertain adult audiences. The rave was going on until the early morning hours. If you had the patience to wait for your turn to sing, karaoke room is always a favorite destination. My favorite event to drop by was Stage Zero. Usually, there would be a game show in the style of anime jeopardy where audience members participate and win prizes. Scarlet Rhapsody winded down the night at the Mariott dive, Tanq. This was the bar that played top 40 outside the entrance. We spent the rest of the evening with staff from Anime Conji and Anime Expo.
