What Does Your Ship Say About You by Jared Every convention has that one panel you stumble into, this year we stumbled into "What Your Ships Say About You" a panel that looked at the psychological theories about why people "ship" different character couples. The theories ranged from wish fulfillment to applying personal relationship feelings to fictional characters. It was a very thought provoking panel that did not cast judgment, but instead tried to help fans understand why they like to pair up different characters. If you have the chance to see this panel as it may help you understand yourself a little bit more. It is always great to see a panel that looks deeper into the psychology of fandom in a mature and thoughtful way.
Fireside Chat: Rob Miles by Jared This year stage zero brought back the fireside chats, where someone from the industry has a more informal interview in the public setting of the stage. I was lucky enough to see Rob Miles at the Friday fireside chat. Rob Miles works for Sega and is a long time fan of anime and Japanese culture. He discussed the difficulty of licensing Japanese media due to the various parties that need to be paid for a product and the fees that come up when releasing a product in the US . Rob Miles also revealed that many older anime titles will never see a rerelease because no one knows who to approach for the licensing rights. Hopefully a future party can consolidate some of those old titles so they do not disappear. It is always great to hear members of the industry talk about the nuts and bolts of how things get done.
Eat at Original Joe's by Victoria A tradition at Fanime Con is to have a meal at Original Joe's. Original Joe's is a rather fancy Italian restaurant that is known for their large portions and quality meals. It is no surprise that there is an hour wait for dinner, but it is well worth it. People can share a meal too with an additional $5 cost. Deb and I shared a chicken parmesan covered in marinara sauce. It was the thing we needed to unwind before we had our late night panel.
WOWOWTF: Trolling Flipino Cinema by Jared Brining back one of our stranger panels WoWoWTF returned to Fanime. The panel consists of silly, strange, and fun clips from Filipino TV and movies. This year we had two hours and a very large turnout. The audience had fun watching our strange clips and made the panel fun. Sadly, since we were running the panel on a different laptop than previous years, some of the clips did not work, which prevented us from showing some of our favorite clips. Despite that, the panel was fun for everyone and the majority of the audience stayed for both hours. Overall, everything worked out great and we are looking forward to running the panel again.
