August 8th, 2004: Recca Con Ice Cream Social
I'm disoriented. I'm jet-lagged. And I'm probably hungover as well. What better way to counteract those maladies than with some ice cream? Darn, no ice cream in the freezer. I suppose I could buy some at the market, but ice cream tastes better when it's free and eaten with company. The closest place I was aware of that would provide free ice cream with company was at the Small World Park in Pittsburg courtesy of Recca Con. I admit that driving one hour in scorching weather for free ice cream with company may sound ridiculous. But consider this: I was bored at home.
Cosplayers entered the park for free and they wanted characters that children may be familar with through Cartoon Network and other cartoon shows. Out of my costume inventory, I had Lupin, Wolfwood, Sanosuke Sagara, and Spike Spiegel seemed to fit the bill. Lupin was axed because I keep hearing how kids do not like Lupin (why they are watching him in the first place is a different issue). Wolfwood was deemed too plain. I could have brought the cross, but
A) It didn't fit in my car.
B) What would the religious folk think?
So it was either Sanosuke or Spike. Initially, I was set for Sanosuke since I haven't worn it in some time. But upon fear that the large quantities of Texan barbeque and other large portions of Texan cooking would have an adverse effect on my waistline, I opted to go with Spike. But as you may have read from the Texas report, I hardly ate at Texas. So waist was no longer a concern. The final vote for Sanosuke was noticing that it was about 100 degrees outside (I thought I left Texas to escape the heat) and Spike's suit was not suitable for such weather.
After much delay, I finally made the drive to the park; making the occasional wrong turn and missing the occasional traffic light and stop sign. I parked, changed into Sanosuke, and hastily did my hair (too hastily as I learned). I was wearing the wrap for about two hours and it was already shifting (I have GOT to fix that soon). Ran into Rico as Team Rocket James and together we stormed the park.
At first glance it looked liked I arrived too late and the park was closing. We walked through the kiddie rides and found the sign indicating the Recca Social area. Looks like we took hold of an air-conditioned castle for a small viewing room and kitchen. I met Jason, who was in charge of the event. he gave us instructions for the day, which pretty much was, "Have fun, take pictures, and socialize." And pretty much on that cue, other cosplayers started appearing. Guess I wasn't late after all.
The park was soon invaded by Bubbles, James, Moogle, Sanosuke, and others who would arrive later. There were plenty of kiddie rides to explore including the Merry-Go-Round and train. Jason had every cosplayer run to the boat to take pictures of us from the "Titanic" movie where Leo shouts out his famous line:
"I'M KING OF THE SQUIRRELS!"
Or something sounding like that. I never saw "Titanic." Darn fangirls spoiled the movie when they said that the boat sank. There was a Western area with a semi-working jail (that James took advantage of) to make use of. The castle had some interesting photo-ops, provided you were fit or crazy enough to use that area.
Rico, Bubbles, and her friend as they went about a few antics including the slide from hell and some fishing in a "no fishing" area. Eventually the heat got the better of a few of us so we split up to find our own ways to cool down.
More began arriving. I hung out with Ziggy, Moo, AJ (as Teen Titans), Judy, Katnap, and others at their picnic. Cosplayers had taken over the train. Ai No Hoshi arrived with a Robin in tow. The mayor of Pittsburg arrived and was setting up the free ice cream distribution. Jason arranged for a group picture with the her. She seemed glad of the turn out of cosplayers and norms. We all grabbed our ice cream (with whipped cream and jimmies). Ziggy gave out miniature "Teen Titan" figures to the kids.
Soon we had pretty much all Recca Con types taking over the train. It was a nice way to tour the park. Talked a bit with Jason regarding MV's and con marketing. Parents would be spinning in their graves (except they're alive and well) if they saw that. Eventually the heat got hotter and things started to wind down (It was scheduled to end at 3P) so we all started to split off for our own thing. And a few last pics to seal this off.
And happy birthday, Victoria.
