What is a convention without cosplayers? Cosplay adds unique color, personality, and public displays of fandom to every convention. The trademark effort of Cheap As Heck Cosplay attended Anime Overdose (AOD) in costumes designed to be cheap to acquire, quick to put on, even quicker to take off to change for the next one, and to easily maneuver the convention area while taking pictures and filming.
The lack of a hotel room at or near the convention further increased the need to cosplay something simple that required minimal preparation. So the planned 20-foot Giant Robo was once again tabled for another convention.
Cheap As Heck Cosplay Lineup
for Anime Overdose 2005: |
Lida
(Psycho Le Cemu Lupin Postcard): I have no knowledge of PLC
or most J-bands. Nevertheless I wanted to show my appreciation for their
presence at AOD. I found a PLC postcard where the band was dressed in
costumes inspired by the classic anime Lupin the 3rd. Lida was dressed
as Inspector Zenigata. He was the easiest one for me to make two days
before AOD so I made it. I didn't know much about Lida until after AOD
but now it won't be so difficult to cosplay him at future conventions.
Worn on the March 4th afternoon. |

Inspector
Zenigata (Lupin the 3rd): I opted not to wear my orange
wig outside the convention and was in a rush for dinner. The easiest solution
was to ditch the wig at the changins station and go as the original Inspector
Zenigata. It was not the most accurate, but it served is purpose as a
costume and warmth during the cool walk in the night. Worn at the
birthday dinner at Mel's. |
|
Seichiro
Aoki (X/1999 Red Artbook): And
now for something a bit more elegant. Victoria and I planned to do X/1999
cosplay during AOD. We originally scheduled it for Saturday, but we already
had a full load that day. So we simply moved our X/1999 representation
to Friday amid the starry night and live music courtesy of Psycho Le Cemu.
Worn during the Friday PLC concert. |

Yuichi
Kayama (Sakura Taisen):
To show our fandom for Sakura Taisen and voice actress Yuriko Fuchizaki
(Ri Koran), Victoria had a new Hanabi-esque costume and I stuck with my
usual Yuichi Kayama. What was new about Kayama was the guitar I was packing.
Now that costume is 100% complete. One main problem with the costume was
that I could not play the guitar to save my life. Another problem was
when my G-string broke during the Fuchizaki panel. And no, I am not cosplaying
Elvis. Worn at the Saturday Fuchizaki panel. |
|
José
(Gunslinger Girl):A
sudden change in plans. Traveling Valentine's favorite Fnimation booth
team prompted us to change our intended Saturday costumes.Victoria debuted
her Henrietta costume and had me tag along as her mentor Jose. I have
not seen any Gunslinger Girl yet but it was fun to play along and carry
a gun at the con. Worn on the March 5th afternoon. |
|
Western
Chibi Kaido (Prince Of Tennis): Intended for the Traveling Valentine
Masquerade skit. But we shelved the skit when we had no time to rehearse
the night before. Nevertheless, we still wanted to wear our Western Chibi
episode costumes since we already finished them. I may never get into
Prince Of Tennis, but at least I'll always enjoy a chibi episode or two.
The main disadvantage of this costume is the lack of large pockets to
store my camera and other gears. Worn during Masquerade. |
|
Yuki
Sohma (Fruits Basket): The final day of the convention called
for costumes that were easy to wear and wander the area in. The Fruits
Basket gathering was scheduled for Sunday and this gathering introduced
us to some new friends who were very nice. It was a relaxing costume to
end AOD in. Worn March 6th. |
These Cheap As Heck Cosplay costumes also worked for the cosplaying couple Traveling Valentine consisting of me and Victoria. We cosplayed characters that matched or made cute couples together as seen on the left side banner.
