This marks the forth year that Scarlet Rhapsody has covered Long Beach Comic Con. Almost every year I get sick just before the event and somehow pull myself together in order to hit the last day. This year I did not get sick and I was finally able to attend both days of the event. Every time I attend this event I am very satisfied with my experience. There is often a good set of guests, some interesting panels, and some great cosplayers. This year was no exception to that rule and this time Long Beach Comic Con surpassed my expectations.

One of the biggest draws of this event is the dealer hall. This year every inch was dedicated to something. There were plenty of booths selling everything from toys, to comics, to shirts. There was a mix of comic book company booths as well which is always nice to see at a comic book convention. I also liked how all the Star Wars fan group booths were clustered together. It is always great to see them at conventions. It was a slight disappointment not to see the wrestling make a return, however with the amount of booths at the dealer hall I’m not too sure there was enough room for a wrestling ring. Finally, the mini-stage was a great addition this year. It allows for some short form panels and entertainment while shopping. The only drawback was that I was unable to find a listing of stage events. I am not sure if I did not see it or if I just lost my copy of it, but it would be nice if it was more clearly posted.

The dealer hall also featured the artist alley. This time it was placed in the middle of the hall and was very well organized. It not only had many of the guest artists, but it also had places for the independent artists. I really liked how easy it was get around this area and how easy it was to find who you are looking for. It could get a little crowded, but it was not too difficult to navigate. I think this was one of the best changes made to the dealer hall layout.

There was a huge listing of panels this year. There were four standard rooms, a large screening room, and a kid’s area. This is a great setup as it provides so much to do over the course of a day. I also really like how the majority of the panels are run by professionals and industry guests. The only time I had a problem was with Scott Lobdell taking time from the panel that came after his. While, I am sure this does not happen too often, panel time limits should be better enforced and followed by everyone including guests. One panel/event that did stand out was Pierre Bernard’s Sexy Cosplay. This was a very strange workshop, but one that I would gladly attend again. The concept of a non-instructional art workshop is such a strange idea that it really makes it unique. It was a bit odd to be in the same room as the masquerade contestants, but neither group caused any problems for the others. This was the first time the panel was run and it was a little unorganized, but I do think there is potential for this panel and I hope it comes back. The other stand out panel was the Nightmare on Elm Street 3 panel. It was great to see several members of the cast talk about the movie. I do think that reunion panels like this should be hour hours long as it always seems like there is more to talk about and not enough time. I look forward to next year's programming as it tends to get better and better every year.I look forward to seeing more cast reunion type panels in the future.

One of the things that makes LBCC a treat every year is that it has such a great vibe. The people who attend are often relaxed and trying to have fun. It is easy to get into conversations about pop culture with random people while at the convention. It is a great place to meet new nerdy friends and it works well for those looking to network creatively. I am really glad that Long Beach Comic and Horror Con has grown into a really good comic book event. More than that, tt is a great event for pop culture lovers of all kinds and ages.

This year Scarlet Rhapsody would like to thank Matthias, the LBCC staff, Suit Loki, Pierre Bernard Jr., Brandon Easton, Kat and Chris, Miko, the Aspen Comics booth team, the Top Cow booth team, the cute gal with striped hair, and everyone who complemented my Dick Tracey costume. We are looking forward to attending next year and if you have questions, comments, or concerns about the report feel free (not) to contact me (Jared [at] Scarlet-Rhapsody.com). Until next time, give my love to Kara Zor-El.
