Tween Academy 2012 by Jared

As the co-host of the panel WoWoWTF the panel that looks at Filipino movies and TV shows it was a nice surprise to see a Filipino movie we had featured in a previous panel at Fanime. The movie is your standard coming of age story featuring a group of socially awkward kids trying to be cool and gain popularity. As expected in a movie like this everyone learns a valuable lesson at the end. Despite the cliché plot and cookie cutter characters there are some very fun parts to this movie. The musical numbers are well done and I will likely be trying to find their cover of "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" as soon as I can. Strangely enough this is one of the better teen movies to come out in awhile and if you are looking for something a little different and somewhat relatable (for nerds at least) then give this movie a try. Tween Academy was an interesting way to begin our Fanime adventures on day one.

Opening Ceremonies by Jared

As is tradition the Fanime Opening Ceremonies took place at stage zero. There was a large crowd gathered for the show. The Fanimaids were there with pom-poms to make a cheer line for the guests of the convention. Each guest came up and told the audience about themselves and promoted their panels and autograph signings. The one part that stood out was Rick Meyers, the Kung Fu expert, having a translator to translate what he was saying into Chinese. Opening Ceremonies was a great way to introduce the guests in a more public forum. There was a fun and informative show that could be seen by anyone in the main concourse of the San Jose Convention Center.

Dealer's Hall by Jared

This year the dealer hall was packed with people looking for some merchandise from their favorite anime series. There was a mix of products including shirts, manga, DVDs, wigs, and figures. As a figure collector there was nothing that impressed me, but I have heard that some hidden gems were found by other collectors. The popularity of the hall caused some crowding that made sorting through some booths difficult, but for the most part it was easy to navigate the hall. The booth that drew in the most attention was the Necomimi booth. This booth featured the mechanical cat ears that react to how much you are concentrating on your surroundings. Each member of the attending staff gave the ears a try. For Victoria the ears continued to perk and for Jared they stayed at attention the whole time.

Victoria brought home a few alpacas and she learned that the Necomimi crew were going to be at Anime Expo. She definately has her sets set on them, even though she is a cat with ADHD. I also picked up a few wigs from Cosplay Wigs.
